Michael Phelps Apologizes for Marijuana Picture

After photos of him smoking marijuana from a bong surfaced in a UK paper last week, Olympic swimming phenomenon Michael Phelps apologized yesterday saying his behavior was “regrettable” (see photo here).

Phelps became a worldwide star after winning a record eight gold medals at the Summer Olympics last year in Beijing, China.

The success made Phelps a media darling and had many companies clamoring for the swimming star to endorse their products, with his agent telling the Wall Street Journal that Phelps could make more than $100 million in endorsements over the course of his lifetime.

It is unclear if the pictures appearing in the News of the World will have any effect on his endorsements, but U.S. Olympic Committee spokesman Darryl Seibel told the New York Times that they have been in touch with sponsors about the incident.

According to the News of the World, the picture in question was taken last November at the University of South Carolina while taking a break from training.

Phelps announced this weekend that he was indeed smoking marijuana in the picture saying he “acted in a youthful and inappropriate way,” and promised it would not happen again.

The incident is unlikely to affect Phelps’ Olympic status as marijuana is not an illegal substance while not in competition.
