Although the decriminalization of the possession of less than an ounce of marijuana has been in effect in Massachusetts for almost a month, some towns in the state say it has yet to come into play for their police force.

Police in the town of Bedford, Massachusetts, about a half hour outside of Boston, say they have no way of telling how the new decriminalization law is faring since it has yet to be enforced.

“It is hard to tell how significant this new law is because we haven’t had any cases yet,” Lieutenant Scott Jones told the Bedford Minute Man. “The new law says that you have 15 days to find out how much marijuana someone is possessing, so we will enforce that.”

Last week police in Hingham, Massachusetts said they had issued five citations for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana since the new law went into effect on January 2nd. The number is higher than average, a police spokesperson told the Daily News Tribune.

People caught with less than an ounce of marijuana face a fine of $100 and confiscation of the drug under the new law.
