New Jersey Takes Step To Legalize Marijuana

A New Jersey Senate panel approved a bill 6-1 on Monday, which, if passed, would make the state the 14th in the country to legalize marijuana for medical use.

Known as the “Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act, ” the bill would legalize the use of marijuana for patients suffering from AIDS, cancer and other debilitating diseases.

But some are not in favor of the decision and would like to see all forms of marijuana remain illegal in the state.

“There are no proper studies about does, how many times do you take it?” David Evans, executive director of the Drug Free Schools Coalition told the Herald News. “Once this bill is approved, you can smoke your head off all day long.”

The bill is still a long way from becoming law, and will need to get full senate approval next year.

However, New Jersey governor John Corzine said this week that he would sign the bill saying it is properly structured and “sensible.”

Michigan became the 13th state to legalize medical marijuana in November when voters approved a proposition allowing people with a debilitating disease and physician approval to use the drug.
