Michigan Medical Marijuana Law Takes Effect Today, In Name Only

A new medical marijuana law takes effect in Michigan today, but it will likely be some time before residents can legally use the drug.
Michigan became the 13th state to legalize marijuana for medical use when voters approved the issue in November.
However, there are still a number of unanswered questions surrounding the use, distribution and growth of marijuana in the state and those issues are unlikely to be cleared up until administrative rules are developed by the state’s department of community health by April 4th.
Until that time it will be “business as usual” according to Muskegon County Sheriff Dean Roesler who told the Muskegon Chronicle he expects to see a lot of confusion with people believing they can light up before rules are set in place.
Another issue will be the distribution and cultivation of marijuana - currently there is no legal way to grow or dispense marijuana under Michigan law. Michigan drivers are also prohibited from having any illegal drugs in their system when operating a vehicle, and it is unclear how or if that will change for people using medical marijuana in the future.
“All the chiefs across the state are waiting for more information,” said Muskegon Police Chief Tony Kleibecker. “From our standpoint, nothing changes (today).”
