The Arcata city council, in Northern California, will vote tonight on new medical marijuana guidelines which will define medical marijuana terms and cover how the substance can be cultivated in the city.
The Eureka Times-Standard reports that if the new regulations are passed, growers will be restricted on the size of their crop, with growth reaching no more than 10 feet in height and not exceeding 50 square feet.
Additionally, a limit of 1,200 watts would be placed on lighting used in the cultivation.
The new guidelines would also prohibit residents from using kitchens, bathrooms and primary bedrooms for growing marijuana.
Regulation of dispensaries will also fall into the guidelines with the city capping the total number of clinics at four and limiting them to specific zones.
If residents or businesses are found in violation of the new regulations they could face criminal or civil penalties, according to the news provider.
The city council’s vote comes just one day after marijuana advocates asked the San Bernardino County board of supervisors to re-evaluate its decision to oppose the issuing of medical marijuana identification cards, according to the San Bernardino County Sun.
Currently, 40 of the 58 counties in California issue medical marijuana ID cards to patients.
