Michigan to Vote on Legalization of Marijuana

Voters in Michigan will vote this November to decide whether or not marijuana should be legalized for medical purposes.

Supporters of Proposal 1 - which would allow patients to be supplied with the drug if they have a registration card from a physician - argue that the law will avoid criminalizing those who smoke marijuana to relieve their pain.

However, others maintain that legalization would result in an increase in drug abuse, particularly among young people.

Dianne Byrum, spokesperson for the Michigan Coalition for Compassionate Care, told WSBT: “This would give protection for medical marijuana patients from the fear of arrest or jail if they use marijuana under their doctor’s written medical recommendation.”

A preliminary poll carried out by the Detroit Free Press found that 66 per cent of Michigans are currently in support of Proposal 1.

Marijuana laws differ in every state, but buying, selling, using or growing the drug is illegal across the U.S.
